CHAPTER 6

RAMTAIL TODAY

History made us think

Legend made us wonder

Time came and went

And the truth came out from under.

—Thomas D’Agostino

The cool waters of the Ponaganset flow over the boulders that once served as a dam. Hikers stroll along the old trail, their dogs wagging their tails, content to be on a walk with their humans. Fishermen toss their lines in the tributary, hoping for some sport while the rest of the local wildlife goes about its daily routine. There is a new peace that pervades the former hamlet. It is one now governed by nature.

Most of the visitors have no idea where the ruins are located or what the actual history of Ramtail is. They only feel the deep tranquility and serenity that has since cloaked the woods. Whenever I visit Ramtail, I feel the same way. It is a place to sit and relax, a place to contemplate or read among the old stonework. It is a place where, no matter what you may know about the factory and its haunting, you still feel drawn to the warmth the woods now provide during the day.

When passing by the traces of ruins that compose the last vestiges of the factory and village, it becomes hard to imagine what the area may have looked like. There are mounds and stone walls scattered about the little village, but nature has reclaimed most of the once cleared land. Even within the visible remains of what was once a home or waste house stand tall maple and oak trees. A 1974 map of the area shows a few cellar hole drawings along the old road but not much else. Day lilies still sprout about the remains of what was once the small but sufficient yards of the mill cottages, and there is a small pothole that resembles a filled-in well.
